COP 27, the United Nations Climate Change Conference began yesterday in Egypt. Countries will be discussing the path to net-zero- and 1.5-degree targets, as well as different goals for the mitigation and adaptation of climate change, as they plot a path to reducing its devastating impacts. Alana Thorburn, Ecology, Conservation and Sustainability Ambassador says “The conference provides us with a wonderful opportunity to refocus on what we can do to reduce our carbon footprint. As a school we continue our work to reach the goal of becoming carbon neutral by 2030. Here are a couple of things that we are currently doing to make this happen:
🌞 We have installed a ground source heat pump under The Merritt Centre which provides the School with green energy
♻️ No waste is sent to landfill
🌟 We are increasing energy efficiency in houses by moving to meters whilst gradually improving windows in houses
🌿 We have rewilding areas onsite which increase biodiversity
🌱 In September, we introduced a new Nature and Rewilding programme into L5 which increases their awareness of environmental issues and their connection with nature”
Additionally, our Eco Prefects (pictured), work alongside Alana to help make change in our local area, helping both people and the planet #SherborneGirlsSustainability #COP27
