Sherborne’s Trailblazing Cadet RSM: Female Leadership at the Helm

As I reflect on my time at Sherborne Girls, one aspect of my school life stands out vividly – my journey in the joint School’s Combined Cadet Force (CCF). I joined Sherborne Girls back in 2018, when the CCF was still tailored purely to the boys. In Middle Fifth, the CCF opened to the girls thanks to Old Girl Eve Messervy. My decision to join the CCF was driven by a desire for new challenges and a sense of camaraderie. I was drawn to the idea of testing my physical and mental limits while being part of a community that values discipline and teamwork. Little did I know that it would become a cornerstone of my time at Sherborne Girls.

I started as a Cadet in 2020, then I was promoted in 2021 to a Lance Corporal which came with the responsibilities to take charge of a section and teach them drill and field craft. Then in 2022 I was promoted to Corporal and now I proudly hold the rank of Cadet Warrant Officer 1, with the title Cadet Regimental Sergeant Major – the first female in the history of the Sherborne Combined Cadet Force to hold this position. I hope that by holding this position I can show other cadets within the CCF that they can do anything if they put their mind to it! Leading the CCF has taught me the importance of effective communication, empathy, and adaptability.

Throughout my time in the CCF, there have been numerous memorable moments that have stood out. Notably I have been part of the Pringle team for 3 years. This has provided me with incredible opportunities like competing at CTCRM Lympstone to working with serving members of the Royal Marines and being taught the most up to date tactics. I have formed great friendships with those from different year groups at both the girls and boys’ school, an opportunity I would have not had outside the CCF.

During my last year in the CCF I wanted to make a lasting impact on those who have served in our armed forces. Along with other senior cadets in the CCF we decided to do a silent auction and a Question Time event in aid of The Royal Naval Association, The Royal Marines Charity and The Army Benevolent Fund. I am pleased to say that we have raised £……… , which will be split equally between the three charities.

The skills and values learnt during my time in the CCF and other co-curricular activities are invaluable and will undoubtedly serve as a solid foundation for the challenges and adventures that the future will hold.
