My mirror looks back at me

Poem by Eve Messervy

from the corona collection

When the coloured world turned grey
It left a mark within its core
Water is not just water
Just not water anymore, I look down and
My hands are mapped in wrinkles now,
From the years
And the fears that passed,
It’s coated in the panic that the world
Unlocked
When life had stopped;
We waited, with the water
Just the water
Washing us with hope,
Whilst laughing at the
Element of failure
As we try to cope.
It’s not just water anymore,
It wears the words
Only found in nightmares
But we laugh at it now
Sipping on wine sitting on deckchairs and
We laugh at it now because the whole world paused for a bit as
The best, the worst
Of human nature
Surfaced a united nature,
The clarity of water shows
Transparency in hoarders
Of the borders that were shut
So tight
Not even water could seep through.
But it all feels like a dream now,
Like a haunting Deja-vu,
One that stuck with us through tinted time
That sat on the ticks of the clocks
That used to chime, but my
Mirror looks back at me –
A detail so small;
The masks amplified the words that
Weren’t said enough at all
It gifted us the love
We had for people
For us all.
