For their holiday work, pupils were asked to annotate the images of two statues – Peace & Wealth and Aphrodite
U6 pupil dasha recreates the feel of the drapery of these two statues
Eirene’s fabric falls more smoothly than in my attempt. I suspect it is to do with the thin and fine nature of the fabric the sculptor recreated. And even if the folds are exaggerated to be this straight, it is acceptable as Eirene is supposed to be the personification of peace and calm and the gentle fall and pooling of the fabric only add to the effect.
In order to mimic Aphrodite’s contrasting thin and wet Chiton against the thick fabric of the Himation, I used a thin fabric with a towel. However the fabric I used for the himation was either too hard or the sculptor created too many folds where there shouldn’t have been that many.
In order to recreate the pose of transition I filmed myself walking backwards and forwards, to see how the fabric would move with me. This allowed me to create a more fluid movement of fabric. It now has more folds and the himation is more like in the statue.
Overall I think that both fabrics in statues could have been realistic. However as I was only able to successfully imitate Aphrodite’s, I think that Eirene’s straight folds in the fabric are unrealistic yet acceptable to the expression and meaning carried by the statue.
