Meet Rosie, L6

Today we introduce you to Rosie, one of our incredible Lower Sixth girls who is currently studying A Levels in Economics, English, Geography and Mathematics. Full of aspiration, she is working towards a career in medicine when she leaves Sherborne Girls in a years’ time.

Eager to enjoy all aspects of school life, Rosie throws herself into a variety of activities from expanding her skills in crochet club once a week to training for the Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, most recently trekking across Snowdonia with the boys from Sherborne School. She also competes in the 1st team for lacrosse adding, “Last weekend we competed at the National Schools Lacrosse Championships in Aldershot where we placed in the Top 20 Schools across the country. We started strongly with two solid victories and a place in division one. Sadly, on the second day we were a couple of players down and although we managed to secure a 3-2 victory again St Mary’s Calne, we lost our first play-off match against a strong Westonbirt team, who went on to be runners up. We all worked really hard as a team and have been dedicated to each other and our success by attending extra LAX training sessions once a week, so despite the last loss, we are very proud of this result.”

Rosie also volunteers for EDCLUB Movement, an initiative set up in 2013 by a group of students to give disadvantaged children in Kenya access to computers and encourage them to learn using the internet. “Once a week, I volunteer my time by skyping young children in Kenya and teaching them basic English and Maths. I feel very privileged to be where I am, and I love spending time with them as it is incredibly rewarding.”

Ahead of moving to Mulliner (our Upper Sixth House) for her final year, Rosie reflects on her time in Kenelm – the Boarding House she has called home for the past four years. Full of love for boarding, she is not only a House Prefect but also supports Kenelm’s House Spirit at all Inter-house events. She explains, “My role here is to encourage the House to participate in all kinds of Inter-house events that happen throughout the year. Most recently, the School held The Castle Challenge at Sherborne Castle where each House ran 5K, competing against each other. I am very proud that we won the Spirit Cup for the most participants from a single House to complete the run in under 40 minutes. We also won the Spirit Prize at the Inter-house football in April for our support of the players. I love encouraging my friends to start the chants, wear House colours and cheer everyone on!” Rosie is proud of how family orientated her House is and the incredible friendships that are formed under the caring eye of Mrs Barnes.

Moving into Sixth Form brings lots of exciting opportunities for the girls including much more independence and responsibility within school. Recently, Rosie, along with six other girls, attended a conference at Bournemouth University, organised by Michael Dooley titled ‘Creating Harmony in the Community – A Dorset Journey’. The conference was attended by a wide range of speakers all of whom spoke about topics that linked to diversity, independence, and adaptation. In the afternoon, Rosie, Selene (another Lower Sixth girl at Sherborne Girls) and a pupil from Bridport School gave a presentation to the audience as part of the Voice of Youth. They spoke about the direction in which they would like the community to pull together and how best we can support each other and our differences. Rosie adds, “It was wonderful to receive a standing ovation from the audience. We felt very passionate about our topic, so it was great to share our opinions with other like-minded people to hopefully get one step closer to achieving a ‘harmonious’ Dorset”.

Looking ahead to leaving Sherborne Girls, Rosie is holding one of the School’s key values tightly. Having been encouraged to always be courageous, she is preparing to fly. Although she mentions that leaving the Sherborne bubble is a daunting prospect, she feels excited to complete her A Levels and pursue the career that she dreams of. With a year to go, we are eager to follow her journey.
