In January, we were delighted to receive the news that Lizza had been appointed as the first ever female Junior Captain of Sherborne Golf Club. At the time, she was keen to encourage other girls to try the sport and play alongside her. Now in the Summer Term, she has provided us with an update.
“At the beginning of this academic year, before I was appointed Junior Captain at Sherborne Golf Club, I approached Mrs Dart with the idea of introducing golf to Sherborne Girls as a Senior Games Sport. Golf has been a passion of mine for eleven years, introduced when I was very little by my grandmother – who still plays. I wanted the School to have the ability to offer an activity that most girls would not have yet had the opportunity to try. I am proud to be the first ever female captain and represent the School in Club and National Competitions as well as playing for the Dorset County squad.

During the Michaelmas term, we promoted golf to all girls from Upper Fifth to Upper Sixth and by the Lent Term we had gained ten girls, all of whom have started taking part in lessons at the Golf Club during Tuesday Senior Games. We are fortunate to have an amazing professional coach, who actively encourages us and inspires other girls (and women) to take up golf. We now can expand our training outside of our Tuesday lesson by practising on the range on a Saturday. This has encouraged three more girls to join the group, standing proud at thirteen with the ambition to recruit more!

I am very excited to have organised a Staff versus Student golf match at the end of the Trinity Term which will mark the perfect ending to our first year of golf at Sherborne Girls. Next year, my goals are to try and maximise our time spent on the range. I’d love to achieve two lessons a week for the School and begin to introduce larger scale matches. A fixture against Sherborne School would also be great!
Whilst I have the opportunity, I’d love to thank Mrs Dart, Mrs Mackintosh, Mr Rowland, and Mr Clarke for their amazing help in making this idea come to life. Golf at Sherborne Girls has come a long way in the past three terms, and I look forward to watching it grow in September”.
