Our Experience in South Africa

During the October Half Term, Alice, Freya and Maddy from Lower Sixth embarked upon an adventure of a lifetime in South Africa. After demonstrating their ability through a rigorous application process, they were selected to take part in the Warriors Accelerated Scholarship Programme, an eight-day tour designed to take students out of their everyday life and challenge them in new ways.

Here are their best bits!

“Skydiving was an overall highlight of the trip for me. The feeling of falling from 11,000ft is something I’ll never forget! I also particularly enjoyed the waterfall hikes early in the mornings. We had to rock climb to access the waterfalls, so it felt like a massive achievement to get there”. Alice, L6

“On the way to do the Big Swing (one of the world’s highest cable gorge swings!), we got caught in a traffic jam. The car in front of us turned the music up and started dancing outside, so we got out to join. Shortly, many people left their cars, and, in the end, there were about 50 people dancing in the street, doing the conga! It was wonderful to see everyone come together. Another highlight was visiting the children’s orphanage – it was the most heart-warming experience, and the children were all very friendly and loving. Lastly, I am proud to have completed a skydive. I was terrified going up in the tiny place and was nervous to watch people jump. However, once I was out of the plane, the feeling was amazing. I felt like I could see the world and the adrenaline rush was incredible”. Freya, L6

“During the first day we did a bridge swim. At the end, as an extra option they asked us who wanted to jump off the 20m bridge into crocodile infested water below. I was extremely hesitant to begin with but knew that I went on the trip for a reason and would only ever have this one opportunity – so I jumped! One of the leaders said this quote which resonated. ‘I would rather regret the things that I have done rather than the things that I didn’t do’. I also loved the early morning exercises including the runs, hikes and swimming”. Maddy, L6
